"Giostra dell'Arme" of San Gemini
Two former factions, each claiming its prestige through what is not only a jousting tournament, a big party but the rediscovery of medieval traditions.
The horseman galloping approaches the target, but the excitement does seem the helmet inside of arms - a shield from noble pierced with a spear - always too small. Only with great dexterity and skill, the rider can hit it and achieve the highest score. From the stands cheering audience pervades the air of excitement and adrenaline, the same that prevailed back in the fourteenth century, a period in which date from the earliest evidence found in the municipal statutes regarding this jousting tournament. Today, as then, the old spirit back to live in the battle between two rival factions, the District, and the District Piazza Rocca, which are two different areas of the town of San Gemini. For the feast of the patron saint, the country enters in turmoil, the two districts begin a healthy competition to the sound of drums, papering the town with the banners of the red-white-blue and green. In turn, the two factions are showing their skills with theatrical performances, parades of flag-wavers and painting exhibitions. The streets are easy to find and fire-breathing stilt walkers, ladies, and jesters. The Knights are endowed, they swear allegiance to their Contrada and get ready for the challenge. The taverns open their doors to the participants, offering local cuisine, and the party can begin.
