The origin of the two villages dates back to around the 12th century. Both, apart from their defensive function, were affected by the traffic that took place along the perpendicular route to the Valnerina, which linked the Rieti area to Spoleto. Matterella, on the left going up the Valnerina valley, rose up around the parish Church of Saint Mary and below the <strong>Fortress of imposing cylindrical bastions<\/strong>, with a square keep in the centre. The village developed following the steep slope of Mount Gabbio. Further down, along the valley road overlooked by noble buildings, the <strong>Collegiate Church of Saint Mary<\/strong> stands out. On the other side is the village of <strong>Precetto,<\/strong> perched on the slope of Saint Angel Mount, surmounted by the watchtower and defended by imposing Guelph crenellated walls. The village stretches towards the valley as far as the Nera river and, in the middle part, lies the <strong>Church of St. Stephan<\/strong>, below which is the <strong>Mummy
